The Montanists and Pepuza

Pepuza

From the middle of the second century, the Phrygian settlement at Pepuza was the centerpiece of the Montanist Christian movement. Pepuza was thought to be the New Jerusalem, the place where it was believed that the coming kingdom would arrive. For twelve miles (roundtrip), we slogged through brush and 99 degree temperatures to reach the site. I only brought a half liter bottle of water which I absorbed in minutes. Nothing to slake my thirst for the next three hours.
